Seasonal Tips For Sod Installation

When should i install sod?

The best times to install sod are spring and early autumn, but sod will thrive if it’s laid anytime during the growing season — which is April through November.

Installation tips by season

Spring/Fall

The cooler temperatures and rainy days help sod get rooted into your lawn quickly and without much watering on your part. Keep these tips in mind:

  • Water the sod extra during its first growing season, especially in the first six months. You don’t want to put any stress on your lawn in the beginning stages.
  • Let your lawn take root for the first 10 days, and then mow it. You may have to mow twice a week due to rapid growth. Keep your mowing height between 2 ½ and 3 inches.

Summer

If you decide to lay sod in the summer heat, there are a number of tips to keep in mind:

  • Water the ground before laying the sod. You want it just damp enough to cool the ground.
  • Gather a few people to help — you want to lay the sod as fast as possible.
  • Water newly laid sod twice per day for 2 weeks, then at least once per day for several more weeks.
  • After 10 days have passed, mow your lawn at a height of 3 inches.

Keep in mind that Shattuck Turf Farms doesn’t offer sod installation. Visit our how-to-page for more tips on installing your new sod.
